The Sacred Condor.- “Watching Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) soar over Colca Canyon, It is easy to see why the Incas and other highland peoples considered it a sacred bird. It flies for hours without flapping its wings using only thermals to spiral so high into the sky that it can disappear from sight. The Andean condor is the largest flying bird in the world, with a weight of more than 10 kg and a wingspan of over 3 meters. But apart from its size, the condor is easy to spot because of the white ruff around its neck, the fingerlike feathers at the end of its wings. The condor’s main food source is carrion, which it is able to detect from thousands of feet up in the air because of its extraordinary eyesight and sense of smell”; written by Peter Frost.

There are many answers but the pretty admissible one has been proposed by Jesuit priest Bernabe Cobo, writing in 1654, one hundred years after the conquest as a kind of “Shrine”, the shrines of Cusco’s sacred landscape; some were natural feature of the land, such as springs, rock outcrops, caves and lakes: others were constructed sites such as houses, walls and water channels which were associated with events in inca mythology; but not only this there are many theories proposed by local and stranger scientists.
